In healthcare, it’s easy to get caught up in the checklist — the charting, the tasks, the schedules. But every checkbox represents a person. A life. A moment that matters. At the bedside, a “quick visit” can hold a last smile, a quiet hand squeeze, a story that won’t be told again. Documentation keeps us safe and organized, but presence keeps us grounded in the human experience. Fred Rogers (yes, the neighborhood Mister Rogers), explained,

“There are three ways to ultimate success:
The first way is to be kind.

The second way is to be kind.

The third way is to be kind.”

Behind the Checklist

Today, let’s remember the person behind the paperwork: those are names, not just numbers; those are faces, not just forms. A census can’t see a daughter’s relief, a note can’t capture a caregiver’s courage, but you can. Your steady voice, gentle touch, and unhurried eye contact are the small moments that become big memories for families.

Thank you for the kindness you bring to the bedside. It matters more than you know.

May grace and peace meet you at every turn and angle,

Chaplain Tobby E. Smith, Ph.D., ThM., M.Div
